20th Century French Artist Chagall

European contemporary gave us a wealth of new movements during the 20th century and the inspiration and creativity has continued into this century as well. The diversity involved here was extraordinary and much wider than most other umbrella groups of artists.

It is simply a case that this period involved the biggest changes in art history when so many different ideas found acceptance in different areas of the art world. What was considered good and bad art was not far less clear and much more open to opinion.

One artist who combined traditional ideas with a modern use of colour and technique was Marc Chagall who originated from Belarus and left Eastern Europe in order to make the most of his talent. Chagall found a new home in France and the artistic audience there was amongst the most forward-thinking of any in the world at that time. This fact was crucial to the artist gaining acceptance for his work which was highly expressive and on the cutting edge of the art world at that time. Chagall paintings are now amongst the most sought after reproductions out there but it did take some time for this painter to achieve fame in his niche.

Once an artist achieves success that can often be the point at which he starts to take on new directions and become more confident and experimental than he had previously been and Chagall is one such example of that.
